XFX Pro Series Core Edition Power Supply Review


Closer Look:

The XFX Pro Series Core Edition power supplies have retained the industrial look of their predecessors. The black satin paint finish is slightly textured and thankfully XFX have gone for a black fan this time around.

















The rear face of Pro Series power supplies have the usual IEC mains input connector with a small rocker type mains on/off switch along with a silver XFX logo. The exhaust grill is made up of a grid of small square holes that occupies all the available unused space for maximum airflow. The front face of the Pro Series power supplies are black plastic mouldings bearing the XFX logo held in place with small black countersunk screws. The fact that the panel isn’t metal and uses a moulded lip on the cable exit port should virtually eliminate the possibility of cable damage.



The small cutout at the top of the side panel shows a small section of the internal fan bracket.


The side panels of the Pro Series power supplies all carry a different label, inverted on the opposite face that clearly displays the power supply's credentials.



The cooling fan grill is pressed out of the metal enclosure eliminating the need for a separate metal wire grill. The centre of the grill carries a silver XFX logo that is covered with a removable plastic scratch protector.


The bottom faces of the Pro Series power supplies all carry their own label to reflect the different electrical specifications of the range.



The XFX Pro Series Core Edition power supplies are all fully wired and the only difference across the series is the addition of a three SATA connector cable on the 850W unit.


The cooling fan on the Pro Series units isn’t mounted on the lid like many other units but instead uses a separate fan mounting bracket. The cooling fan is a 135mm unit from ADDA, model number ADN512UB-A90, and rated for 12VDC at 0.44A.



The printed circuit board on the 650W unit is at first glance identical across the range so either the same board is used across the range (unlikely) or the specification of some of the main components has been changed to reflect the different power requirements.


The two main capacitors differ in value on the 750W and 850W units and I noted different bridge rectifiers used on the primary side so I think it’s safe to assume the latter. The capacitors used, and as stated in the literature, are of good quality Japanese manufacture with the more welcome 105°C working temperature rating.



The XFX Pro Series Core Edition power supplies are well built units with a neatly laid out printed circuit boards. Heat sink size is minimal which reflects the high efficiency levels of an 80 Plus Bronze certified unit. Let’s move on and see how well they perform.
