Intel Core i9 7980XE & Core i9 7960X Testing:

3DMark: The just-released version of Futuremark's popular 3DMark suite is designed to let a wider range of the user base make a comparative analysis of the gaming prowess of their systems from entry level PCs, to notebooks, and extreme gaming PCs.

Hitman (2016):

Hitman (2016) is a stealth action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Hitman (2016) is the sixth iteration of this series and acts as a prequel to the entire series, while also taking part after the events in Hitman: Absolution. The game was developed by IO interactive and published by Square Enix, with a release date for PC in March 2016 for the first part of the episodic content. To deliver the visuals, the game uses a modified Glacier 2 game engine. This title takes advantage of the ability to run in DirectX 12 mode for users who have adopted Windows 10.

Tom Clancy's The Division:

Tom Clancy's The Division faced an uphill battle to become the highest opening day grossing title in Ubisoft's history. Built as an open-world, third-person shooter video game, Ubisoft Massive developed the game with some assistance from Red Star Entertainment for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, with Ubisoft taking care of the publishing. Ubisoft Massive developed and built the Snowdrop game engine specifically for The Divison due to the need for an intelligent engine to manage the dynamic global illumination, destruction, detail, and visual effects.

At this point in my testing, I ran into some concerns with the performance of these two chips and the platform. No matter what I tried, I could not get the two latest Core i9 processors to deliver gaming performance on par with its capabilities. Stock or overclocked, the gaming performance was not what I would expect and will be reaching out to the motherboard manufacturer to try and address this concern.


Without a Threadripper chip to offer a full comparison, I was able to call in a favor from one of our team that just stepped up and bought a new Threadripper system using the 1950X. It was built using components similar to the test system I have for the Core i9 7980XE and Core i9 7960X. This quick comparison will consist of three tests: Cinebench R15, Geekbench 4.1, and Blender using AMD's review file.

With the limited testing, this set of multi-threaded benchmarks show that the Core i9 processors deliver substantial performance increases over the best that AMD has to offer. That being said, that performance comes as a significant price penalty.
