Going Medieval (Early Access) Review

   -
Price: $24.99

Introduction:

In March I had the opportunity to preview Going Medieval, a game set after a plague has devastated this dark-age world. Nature has reclaimed everything and you must lead a group of survivors to build a new settlement capable of supporting these people. Animals, bandits, and the weather all threaten your people, making it necessary for you to build homes and develop the technologies they need to protect and defend themselves.

For the preview, the build was a beta version but now Going Medieval is in its Early Access phase, so while development is not done, it is available for purchase. Along with this release, publisher The Irregular Corporation and developer Foxy Voxel have shared a roadmap for what we can expect in the future, including fire, trading and merchants, mounted siege weaponry, and the ability to tame wildlife. Of course this review will be limited to the experience I have actually had and not what the game is to offer in the future. (I do hope to return to this game at full release, but we will see what is possible when that eventually happens.)

By the way, I did receive the review key from Tinsley PR prior to the game's release to Early Access, but was unable to start on it until after release, as I was working on another review. At least that means there is no Day One patch to alter the experience. Like with the preview, I have captured my playthrough and am sharing it. Also, because the graphics do not appear to have significantly changed since the preview, I will be skipping the Graphics section; here is a link to the preview's Graphics section for reference. I am also omitting a Story section, as the story is as I described above; survivors of a plague in the dark ages trying to build a new settlement. The only possible points to add are the explanations given for why bandits or other settlements decide to raid yours.

I am unaware of a rating for Going Medieval, and while its own content is nothing I consider too intense or graphic, I cannot promise the same for my review playthrough. Though I do not recall any specific use of inappropriate language, it is entirely possible I did, so it may not be appropriate for everyone.

Without those two regular sections, we can get straight to covering the Gameplay experience, which is the most important part of any game.
