G.SKILL Ripjaws MX780 RGB Gaming Mouse Review

G.SKILL Ripjaws MX780 RGB Gaming Mouse: Conclusion

The G.SKILL Ripjaws MX780 RGB gaming mouse is pretty intense to look at. Some people might find it too flashy, while others may love it. I was initially worried about how comfortable it would be based on its aggressive design. Overall, it feels nice, especially after customizing the side pads and palm rest height. It took a while to train my ring and pinkie fingers to not grip where the side buttons are located. The mouse seems accurate enough. There is definitely mouse acceleration present, but that is a preference issue – few people know what mouse acceleration is, and Windows and some games apply mouse acceleration at a software level.

The customizability is very nice, as being able to choose the colors, size and shape, and weight to make it a personal fit can be a great feature – if you want to take the time to do so. Unfortunately, not all of the default colors were accurately reproduced from the software to the mouse. It is nice that mouse settings are saved to the mouse itself with up to five profiles (and you can bind a button to switch them). I found it beneficial to use the DPI button to swap profiles, and having a few profiles with only one DPI option each and different color schemes so I knew which profile/DPI I was using.

The main problem I found with this mouse is with using cloth mouse pads – lifting the mouse would cause it to stop working momentarily when sat back down as if it were recalibrating. Using a hard surface the mouse worked perfectly. I used a Ratpadz hard pad, an XTracGear Ripper cloth pad, and a Corsair Gaming Mouse Mat cloth pad. Only the hard plastic pad worked reliably when lifting the mouse and setting it down. Optical mice can benefit from irregular or more obvious patterns and textures – it helps them with their tracking. The cloth pads were such a fine mesh that the sensor seemed to have to recalibrate after a liftoff. If this was disclosed then this review would have been nearly perfect. Other than that, this mouse performed very well and if the price is right it is definitely worth checking out!

  • Interchangeable side grips
  • Palm rest height is adjustable
  • RGB LEDs are color adjustable
  • High DPI options up to 8200 DPI
  • High 1000Hz polling rate

  • Sensor would become unresponsive for a moment after a liftoff on CLOTH mouse pads.
