Gigabyte X99-Designare-EX Review


Gigabyte X99-Designare-EX Testing:

CrystalDiskMark: CrystalDiskMark is a hard drive benchmark designed to measure the read and write speeds of drives by using 4K blocks, 512K blocks, and sequential data. For the test, we chose the 1000MB option.



ATTO 2.47: will be used to measure USB 3.0 performance using an SSD attached to an external USB 3.0 drive dock.



U.2 Testing:

Gigabyte's X99-Designare-EX is equipped with U.2 connectivity to offer a significant disk drive performance advantage over a standard SATA 6Gbps or SATA Express package. I will use ATTO to see just what that advantage is by comparing an external USB 3.0 hard drive, the attached SATA drive, and an Intel 400GB 750 series NVMe PCIE 3.0 U.2 SSD.


Looking at disk drive performance, Gigabyte's X99-Designare-EX delivers comparable or better drive performance in these tests. Usually ASUS comes out on top in the USB 3.0 testing, but not so much in this round of tests. A connected U.2 SSD offers up a ton of drive performance if you step into a board like this from Gigabyte. You won't have to give up a device slot on the board to get it either. Moving to a U.2 connected device frees up space for additional graphics cards if you move to a 2 or 3-Way graphics configuration.
