Cooler Master MasterPulse Pro Gaming Headset Review

Testing the CM MasterPulse Pro headset required some serious music listening sessions, a movie or two, and some intense gaming sessions. Granted, there's no easy way to measure sound quality, but I will do my best to describe any flaws or drawbacks in the sound reproduction that these sound-quality oriented headphones can deliver. The MasterPulse Pro does have the option of leaving the ear cup covers on to reduce bass output, but after a few rounds of listening, I decided to continue on without them attached as they neutered the bass output to the point where I didn't like the sound.

Testing Setup:

This is where the CM MasterPulse Pro set really stands out: gaming. The extensive bass response along with the ability to go LOUD allows you to crank up the volume to hear the details while still getting rocked with crystal clear and thunderous explosions. Because of the prodigious output, it's very easy to hear quiet sounds you might normally miss, while also placing things quite easily in terms of direction. The 7.1 surround feature will likely end up personal preference as it adds a feeling of spaciousness, but can also make it harder to hear quiet details since it adds so much ambiance. It's hard to describe, and I'm not sure if I like it or not. The various audio presets (named gaming, music, and movies) are a personal preference as well. I found the "movies" preset was actually the most enjoyable in game, if any was to be used. Long story short? These rock for gaming.

Hm, where would you want extreme output, low bass, and distortion free everything? MOVIES! I fired up my copy of Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens to see how immersed in the action I could become. I was not disappointed! The traits that make this headset great in gaming translate quite well over to movie time. The 7.1 surround feature falls on its face a bit when watching movies, as it felt more like it was just adding an echo filter with a bit more treble than it was providing better spacial placement of sounds. Ignoring that? Again, the incredible output makes it very easy to get drawn into the intense scenes while still being able to pick out the details that you might sometimes miss when listening at lesser volume levels. Again, another win for the MasterPulse Pro.

Music is life for some. A good set of headphones may be great at impactful gaming and movies, but if they sound bad for music, they can be a total flop. Luckily for the MasterPulse Pro, this is not the case for them! While the volume adjustment was far too loud even at the lowest setting, a quick adjustment in VLC (my media player of choice) cleared that up. Once adjusted to not ear-destroying levels, the CM MasterPulse Pro again surprised me with the extremely wide frequency response without too much emphasis in any one band. Rock? Sounds good. Dubstep? Rocks your ears. Classical? Sounds like Mozart is in your gaming room. They will still crank to deafness-inducing levels without flinching or distorting, but for your ears' sake, you'd be best limiting them to something around 25% or so. The various presets can help tune the sound to your liking, but again, the 7.1 surround feature is likely a personal preference thing. I did not enjoy the altered sound with music like I did with some games. Overall? 9/10 for music!
