Cooler Master Silent Pro 1200W Power Supply Review


Closer Look:

The Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200W power supply is finished off with a satin, slightly textured, matt black paint that offers a certain level of resistance to scratching and fingerprints.


















The rear face of the power supply has an IEC mains input connector with a Cooler Master logo underneath, mains on/off switch, and a large hexagonal-holed exhaust grill. The front panel carries the modular cable connector panel that consists of two PCI-E and five peripheral cable connectors. Two small pin-out diagrams underneath the cable exit port show the voltages on the modular cable connector pins.



The side panels carry identical 1200W Silent Pro Gold logos, although it’s inverted on the opposite side to the one in the photograph.


The top of the power supply shows the specification label with information on maximum rail loading, agency approval logos, and some cautionary notes advising against opening up the power supply and exposing the hazardous voltages inside. A large 135mm fan is used for cooling, which is shielded with a gold wire frame grill with the Cooler Master logo at its center.



The captive cable set consists of a 20+4-pin motherboard connector, two 4+4-pin ATX12V/EPS12V connectors, and a total of four PCI-E connectors - two 6+2-pin and two 6-pin. Cooler Master has used one cable set for two PCI-E connectors by branching a 6-pin PCI-E connector of a 6+2-pin PCI-E connector - a configuration I don’t like to see on high end power supplies. What I do like to see, however, is cable sleeving that goes all the way into the power supply - it does improve the overall appearance of the power supply. The modular cable set consists of two PCI-E cables with two connectors on each, three SATA connector cables, and two 4-pin peripheral connector cables, one of which has a single floppy connector. All the power supply end connector plugs are gold to match the modular cable sockets on the power supply to avoid confusion during installation.



The large 135mm black cooling fan is a DFS132512H by Young Lin, rated at 12V, 30W. The printed circuit board is tidy and well laid out and makes use of large aluminium heat sinks with plenty of surface area to improve heat loss. There are a couple of boards stood vertically that would appear to be DC to DC converters for the 3V3 and 5V0 rails - every little bit helps in the drive for higher efficiency.



Patented technology used by the Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200W power supply includes HTT, Hyper Path and Hybrid Transformer. HTT is the use of an L-shaped heat sink that can be seen in the photographs. According to the literature, in combination with superb ventilation, HTT removes heat waves from the power supply. Hyper Path and Hybrid Transformer are technologies that combine components, integrated circuits, and heat sinks with the transformers to improve efficiency. The smaller of the two heat sinks shown in the photograph is physically connected to the transformer underneath it - this is the Hybrid Transformer. The extra help given by the heat sink enabled a reduction in transformer size of 25% and increased efficiency. If you look carefully at the smaller heat sink, there are a couple of temperature sensors held in place by heat shrink sleeving and I’m pretty sure one of these sensors will be used to control the fan speed - the other is probably for temperature compensation in the control circuitry. I couldn’t see a manufacturer for the electrolytic capacitors, but they are rated at the more welcome 105 °C maximum working temperature.



The build quality of the Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200W power supply is excellent. Take this in combination with sturdy packaging that offers great protection, an adequate set of accessories, and great looks, and all's well so far, so let’s see how it performs.
