Anonabox FAWKES Tor Router Review


Anonabox FAWKES TOR Router Testing Setup:

To test the Anonabox FAWKES, I wanted to put it through a series of tests to measure the speeds of traffic using the device. To accomplish this, I ran several speed tests using TOR and without TOR. To give a better idea of the Anonabox versus normal TOR Browser on a computer, I also ran comparison tests from the computer itself for each scenario. In addition, since the Anonabox FAWKES supports both client and AP wireless modes, the tests were run using a combination of wired and wireless connections. For TOR, I edited the TORRC file and forced the exit nodes to the United Kingdom, since as a security service you want your traffic to exit a foreign country.


Testing Setup:

  • Mobile Computer: Microsoft Surface 3
  • Processor: Quad-core Intel Atom x7-Z8700
  • Memory: 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • Hard Drive: 128GB SSD
  • Wireless: Wireless A/B/G/N/AC
  • Wired: Anker USB to Ethernet adapter
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit



Anonabox FAWKES TOR Router Results:

No Services: This run I used no services to get a good baseline. 



TOR: This run uses TOR only, no VPN. To keep as consistent as I can, I chose the exit nodes to always be the United Kingdom. I did not specify what circuits to use, so keep that in mind.



As expected, using TOR does give a huge performance hit. However, security for some will trump stability such as myself. Using the FAWKES does also give a bit of hit to speed, especially when using WLAN Client/Server mode together, but the difference is negligible, allowing for use with mobile devices as well.
