Absolver Review

Graphics:

Absolver has a special art style to it that I will describe as painted. I am not an art expert, but to me it makes me think of a painting with how the colors are used and applied. Regardless, it looks pretty good and works well for this game world. It also has some pretty good lighting, though I have seen it do something odd at times. I am not sure why, but when entering a new area I have seen the shadows suddenly shift, as though the sun has to move to a new position just because I have moved. Just a little odd to see.

The environment is not lacking in detail with this painted style, but it is not as though it is realistic, but I do not think I would want it to be. With some of the effects select attacks involve, a clear differentiation from reality is a good thing to have. It makes little sense for your leg to be surrounded by molten rock otherwise.

It might be that I am getting drained by all of these reviews, but I do not have more to say for the appearance of the game. It looks good and has this painted style to it. You can see it clearly in the screenshots, and if they are indeed worth a thousand words then I am unsure what more I need to type about them.

Performance is up next, so here are my computer's specs:

  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1080 8 GB
  • PhysX: NVIDIA GTX 1070 8 GB
  • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4x8 GB (32 GB total) at 1866 MHz 10-10-10-27
  • PSU: OCZ Fata1ty 750 W
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

I played the game on its highest settings with camera shake turned off, as well as the in-game vsync. My computer was able to reach 60 FPS consistently, but it was not uncommon for it to drop into the 50s and even the 40s. These drops do not worry me though as my guess is they result from my CPU not quite matching the load of the game's Ultra settings and the load of tracking other players. Updates will probably help some, but lowering settings from all Ultra would probably be an easy, and immediate, solution. Of course playing Offline also alleviates this some, and as I just tested it some, the performance only dropped into the 50s on occasion, so it was an improvement.

 

 

I will mention that I did encounter one graphics bug that I am very willing to believe will be fixed in future patches, assuming it was not just a fluke on my machine. At one point for me some objects just vanished from the game. This led to other objects appearing to float in midair without support; a rather odd sight. Regardless, this is not something I am going to hold against it as it did not substantially disrupt my experience at the time and a restart of the game would fix it.

It looks good and plays well even at its Ultra settings, so there is really nothing to complain about here or really even criticize much. The moving sun is unusual, but that is all I have for the graphics.
