Cougar 700M EVO eSports Mouse: Introduction

Could this be a mouse that is more comfortable than the Logitech G502 Hero? Seriously?! Today we're going to dive into the latest modular mouse from Cougar. This one is the 700M EVO eSports. While this isn't a brand new product, we're going to take a fresh look at this mouse and see how it stacks up.

Cougar 700M EVO eSports Mouse: Technical Specs

The specs sheet below comes straight from Cougar. Let's take a look at what we're working with here before we continue. Cougar has graciously provided a nicely detailed chart on its page for this product. I'll go ahead and put that chart down below.

Let's go ahead and take a look here at the packaging. The box for the 700M is a break-away design. This means that the main box on the outside is two pieces. The box will break away in the center and make way for the plastic casket inside where the actual mouse sits. The 700M is also attached to a piece of formed cardboard that helps with the rigidity of the package itself.

The package itself when it is fully intact is very rigid. I don't think there's ever a chance where the 700M will be damaged in any kind of shipping event. Unless it is crushed of course... I appreciate it when a company spends a little extra time designing its shipping material. It's always such a huge disappointment when you order a product online or goes to the store to pick it up and there's a huge dent in your box. Then you open the box and there's a massive defect in your product because you had Jim Carrey as your UPS guy and he was kicking your package down the street. You could probably play hockey with this thing and it would be fine.

Here's a picture of everything that is included inside the box with the 700M. There are some weights, ar replacement wrist rest, some stickers, and a replacement set of footpads for the mouse. We'll talk a little about the contents more in-depth in a moment.

As you can see from the photos of the break-away shell, there are a few cool features that this mouse has. First, the palm rest on the mouse can freely articulate. It can move up and down along the back of the mouse as well as up and down towards your palm. The idea here is to allow you to get the perfect fit for your hand. If you have a claw grip, you can adjust the angle to be a little more aggressive to help facilitate that style. If not, you can simply just relax the angle and rest your palm down naturally.

The 700M also features adjustable weights that can be added or removed from the spine of the mouse to provide the best possible center of gravity for your movements. There's a removable spine that has four slots for the included weights that are pictured above. I personally LOVE this feature. Not only is this feature implemented well, but adding all of the weights feels perfect. The only other mouse I have used that feels this comfortable for me is the G502 Hero from Logitech. I'm going to show a picture below that was provided by Cougar to show you what this looks like. You just pop the little spine out, add your weights, and pop it back in.

Speaking for the build quality of the 700M, I was surprised by this. The central skeleton of the mouse is aluminum which is painted orange. This provides a very strong and rigid feel to the mouse. The thumb and fifth finger rest on the side are a textured plastic that feels nicely contoured to my hand. There is a "sniper" button that is adjustable where your thumb sits. It is recessed enough to where you won't accidentally hit it when you are playing games. The mouse wheel has a great texture to it, and scrolls well. Whoever designed this mouse plays video games. I feel like this is close to the perfect concept for a mouse.

The RGB lights on the mouse are full-spectrum RGB. The lights on my unit are a little dim, but I don't care for too much RGB anyway. I'm not looking at my mouse while I'm gaming. The feel and usability are much more important to me, so I don't mind. If you care a lot about RGB, it might bother you a little bit. The RGBs below are pretty close to Cougar orange.

Cougar 700M EVO eSports Mouse: Software

The software for the 700M EVO is the Cougar UIX software. As with all Cougar devices, this software is tailored specifically for each device. You have to download a new instance of UIX for every Cougar device you own. I think this isn't a very good design. Every other peripheral company has software that can intelligently detect which products are connected and load modules for each one. I'm not sure exactly why Cougar's software is like this, but it is kind of annoying. As for the software itself though, it works fine. With the newer revisions of UIX, the user interface is much cleaner. The instructions are clear and concise and everything you could need is laid out for you.

The first panel here is for adjusting your DPI profiles onboard. You can set up three DPI profiles as well as the sniper profile setting. These can be changed on the fly with the DPI button below the mouse wheel. Fairly common feature here, but it is implemented well.

The second panel is for changing your key assignments on the mouse. You can fully change all of the buttons on this mouse if you wish. There's a button on the left side of the left mouse button that you can bind to whatever you'd like as well. Just an extra key for added value. You can also rebind the sniper button if you so desire.

The final panel is for designing your RGB profile. As I mentioned before, the RGB on the 700M is full spectrum. You can also set the lighting to breathe or just have it set as a static color. Your choice. I picked a color as close to the Cougar orange as I could for this review. I think it looks pretty nice.

Cougar 700M EVO eSports Mouse: Conclusion

Wow. I was absolutely stunned by this product. I was not sure what to expect. I've reviewed a few products from Cougar this year that I didn't have a good experience with. I have always known Cougar for its quality products. This mouse REALLY reinforces to me that Cougar can make a fantastic product. This mouse is a massive rival for the G502 Hero and just might take up permanent residence on my desk. Coupled with a hard mouse pat, I challenge you to find a more comfortable and functional mouse. As I mentioned, the RGB is dim on this unit. It could just be my unit, but it also could be the LEDs that are being used in this product. If you care for RGB deeply, just keep this in mind. Otherwise, this is a perfect mouse in almost every way. Having to install multiple different UIX software clients for different Cougar products is silly and needs to be fixed. Other than that, this is a big recommendation from me. At 89.99, I can definitely recommend a purchase for this mouse.
