It was not long ago the next expansion for Galactic Civilizations III, Intrigue was announced, but that is not stopping Stardock from doing other work on the game. Today the company has released v2.8 of the game, and it brings a number of improvements and updates to the game, including the new asynchronous AI-based Supreme Commander system that will oversee computer players. This new systems takes advantage of the game's new 64-bit core-neutral engine and leverages the fact most computers today have at least four CPU cores to deliver AI powered by a semi-genetic algorithm. This should result in a better experience for players, as they face off against the improved computer opponents.

Other changes with v2.8 include balance tweaks to make building 'tall' empires viable along with 'wide' empires. Instead of having to extend your borders across the map with less developed worlds, you can keep a small empire that is very well run and advanced and still affect the galaxy around you. The UI also enjoys some tweaks to streamline gameplay and has more in-game descriptions, to hopefully make the experience more approachable for new players. The combat has also been rebalanced some to make defenses more worthwhile.
