Microsoft Azure Deploys AMD Epyc Processors for Upcoming Lv2-Series Virtual Machines

When AMD launched its Ryzen processors in the beginning of the year, many praised the CPUs and the company for returning competition to the industry. It was later that AMD released its Epyc processors to challenge Intel in datacenters and other professional settings, where it has been successfully gaining clients. The most recently announced client is Microsoft for it Azure Lv2-Series virtual machines.

Microsoft Azure is an enterprise-grade cloud computing platform, and its L-Series VMs are specifically optimized for storage. Microsoft chose to use Epyc 7551 processors because of the high I/O bandwidth they provide and 128 PCIe lanes each CPU offers, which surpasses available two-socket solutions. The Lv2 VMs Azure will offer will span from 8 to 64 vCPU sizes, with the largest offering direct access to 4 TB of memory.
