XFX R9 390X Testing:

Crysis 3:

This third installment of the Crysis franchise, developed by Crytek and distributed by Electronic Arts, uses the CryEngine 3 game engine and requires a DirectX 11 ready video card and operating system due to its demanding graphics engine.

  • System Spec = Very High

Far Cry 4:

Far Cry 4 is the latest iteration in the Far Cry series. Released in the US in November 18, 2014, it uses a modified Dunia 2 game engine as we saw in Far Cry 3 and is published and developed by Ubisoft. This action-adventure, first-person shooter offers both single player and multi-player modes.

Settings

  • FXAA
  • HBAO+
  • In-game settings = Ultra
  • God Rays = On
  • Fur and Tree Relief = On

The XFX R9 390X delivers FPS performance levels very close to those of the reference GTX 980 in Crysis 3. The 4K performance on a single card is going to dictate that you drop the AA level, but at 4K do you really need it? Once overclocked, the performance level falls to closer to GTX 780 Ti and GTX 970.

In Far Cry 4, the XFX R9 390X delivers easily playable FPS until you hit 3840 x 2160. When overclocked, the gap between the comparison NVIDIA cards grows even though this card is running the highest core clock speed I have coaxed from a Hawaii/Grenada core.
