Short Circuit Protection:

I short circuited the 3V3, 5V0 and all of the 12V lines in turn. The power supply did shut down, and once the short was removed and the unit switched off for at least one second, resumed normal operation. Although listed here at the beginning of the testing section, I tend to leave this test until the very end, in case it doesn't quite go to plan.

The XFX XXX Edition 650W power supply would not start with no load, so to give some idea of the voltages at very low loading an old Western Digital WD800 hard drive was connected up to pull approximately 25W. It was enough to start the power supply, but too low for the regulation to kick in on the -12V rail which sat at only -10.75V. This isn't a problem but goes to illustrate that some power supplies require their rails loaded to a minimum level before voltage regulation kicks in correctly. The voltage regulation on the XFX XXX Edition 650W power supply is on the whole excellent. The +5VSB rail never actually reached 5V which is unusual but not a problem and everything is within the limits set down by the ATX12V V2.2 specification.
