WolfKing Timberwolf FPS Gaming Keyboardajmatson - August 22, 2007
For the gaming portion of the testing, I was looking for customization, response time, and comfort in comparison with a regular 104-key keyboard. Although the Timberwolf took a little bit getting used to, it performed very well. Once you get the feel down for where the keys are located, it becomes second nature to you. I did like the fact that I could assign any key to the action that I wanted via the in-game control settings. I also liked how the movement and number keys are colored black while the others are gray so it makes it easy to get your hand back to the right place if you have to move it for a moment.
Now let's get into the testing side of it. First up is customization. The keyboard comes with no software to program it, so all of the setup is done in the game. This is also the same for a standard keyboard, so as far as customization goes, it is head on in a tie.
Next up we have response time. Response time is critical in a First Person Shooter type game because that split second can make the decision of whether it is you or them who dies. Just like it is important to have a good performing mouse, it is just as important to have a great keyboard. While playing F.E.A.R. and Battlefield 2142, I noticed a big difference. My kill/death ratio for 2142 per round went from 4:1 to an average of 7:1. That is 7 kills for every death. Now in a game like 2142 and F.E.A.R. where you have many people on a fast moving server, that is a good score to have.
Finally, we have comfort. When playing for hours on a regular keyboard, I usually get that crampy feeling in my hands like carpal tunnel. It makes for a really bad day because as your hands start to hurt, your performance level starts to drop, leading to more deaths and frustration. With the Timberwolf's hand rest at the bottom of the circular portion of the keyboard, my hands didn't get tired and sore as quickly, so I was able to keep up my streaks for longer periods of time.
This shows that in the areas that matter, when gaming, the Timberwolf smashes its contender, the standard keyboard.
