Synology DiskStation DS1515+ NAS: Testing Setup

The Synology DS1515+ is a beast of a NAS and I wanted to put it through a good set of tests to show you how it performs. I used a serial of tests designed to really test the NAS itself by selecting benchmarks that actually copy data to the drives to bench test the speeds and timings of the transfers. For this reason, I chose CrystalDiskMark 5.1, the trusted Intel NAS Performance Toolkit, and also made my own real-time transfer test using a group of small to medium files that would represent documents, pictures, and more that a user would normally transfer to a NAS. The groupings were in 10MB, 100MB, and 1000MB total sizes, where I measured the average transfer speed and the time it took to complete the transfer. To measure this, I used TeraCopy. One thing to note for the testing, to make it as accurate as I could by eliminating any network congestion, I connected the NAS directly to the computer NIC using a CAT6 cable so there were no switches or general network congestion to skew the numbers.

Testing Setup:

  • CrystalDiskMark 5.1.0 x64
  • Intel NAS Performance Toolkit 1.7.1
  • Real Time Transfer using 10MB, 100MB, and 1000MB of random small to medium files.
