Ozone Strike Pro Backlit Mechanical Gaming Keyboard:  Conclusion

Let's wrap things up with a rundown of the pros and cons of this keyboard. Ultimately, a keyboard is only as practical as one makes it. Having a keyboard with a bunch of customizable macros, lots of lights, or only the basics isn't something that can be outright judged unless it doesn't work. Practicality does have a factor, but this is something really left to someone's personal preference. I believe reviews should be the least biased as possible, but peripherals are extremely hard to follow these guidelines.

To start off, let's talk about where Ozone falls short and then end on a good note. All my complaints about the Strike Pro are completely subjective, but from my standpoint it puts a dent in desirability. First up is the issue I came across while testing out the software. Ozone's placement of the macro keys isn't ideal for any game I can think of, unless you reassign all the WASD keys to the number pad and play that way. For the rest of us, reaching across the keyboard to hit a macro and then back to the WASD is a few valuable seconds lost and that can be the deciding factor in most games. This means, unless you only need to reassign normal keys to another location, you are out of luck for easy macros, as the software does not allow macros on other keys.

Next up is the price, as it is in direct competition with a few other brands that have a very similar compact keyboard for a bit less, or better ones for a little more. While I have seen the Strike Pro go for $110, the MSRP is $140, and that is what I have to go by. You can't expect an RGB backlit mechanical keyboard for that price, but for a few dollars more you can get an RGB one, which can be a factor for some. Purely from a consumer point of view, a mechanical keyboard with the same switches and a backlit option comes down to brand preference and price, which usually is a factor for most buyers. Therefore it's hard to say the Strike Pro is the best choice for the money.

Speaking of backlit options, the Strike Pro has some very bright red LEDs that overpower your vision while playing in a dark room. Even when the lights are on, it's fairly distracting and that is a problem. Even when the lights on the keyboard itself is dimmed, it still overpowers the white LEDs by far. The lights can be turned off, of course, but that defeats the purpose. I would have liked to see Ozone have more options when it comes to the backlights. The fact that the red LEDs can be left on alone makes me believe Ozone could have programed the ability to turn off any light and set any brightness per key. It just seems like a missed opportunity considering the lackluster lights already.

Finally, to wrap things up, Ozone has a lot of good things going for it with the Strike Pro that should appeal to a lot of gamers. The most notable thing, besides just having ,echanical keys, is the rock solid frame that seems to able to take some abuse before any problems arise. A lot of keyboards I have used give a little in the middle and sometimes enough to be noticeable while playing games, as the hand shifts slightly, causing you to miss the mark. Besides the frame, the weight is enough to keep the keyboard in place, as it won't be moving around at all.

While I have ranted a bit about the things this keyboard did wrong, a lot has been done right and even better than most keyboards. The compact form was a design choice and with that comes a smaller layout, which didn't help the macro keys. Overall, if the price is right, this keyboard may be just right up your alley. Either way, I suggest weighing the odds before spending the money, unless Ozone is already your brand of choice.
