OCZ Trion 150 480GB SSD Introduction:
By now, everyone should know that installing your operating system onto a solid state drive (SSD) is going to result in a much better user experience. From faster system start-ups to faster data transfers, and just an overall feeling of your PC being revitalized. Not many system upgrades outside of a new graphics card offer as much enhancement to the system operation and that all important experience. SSDs started out as small capacity, high per-GB-priced drives that were cost prohibitive and tied to the SATA bus. Now we get the benefit of years of learning after being guinea pigs in the great experiment, as each successive generation of drives gets better and better. Capacities have increased substantially while costs have spiraled ever downward to affordable levels. At this point, you can get a 1TB SSD for just over $200 if you spend some time shopping around on e-tailers.
Knowing these things, OCZ developed its Trion lineup to deliver a lower cost entry level drive, starting with the Trion 100. While pretty fast in its own right, the Trion 100 took some heat in reviews. To address those concerns, OCZ went back to the well and have developed the Trion 150 series, which I am looking at today. Available in capacities from 120GB to 960GB and price points from $60 for the 120GB version up to $210 for the 960GB version, the Trion 150 series drives are very affordable. IOPS performance varies slightly across the drive capacities, but 550MB/s sequential reads is standard across the board, while sequential writes start at 450MB/s and scale up from there. Pricing on the Trion 150 480GB drive I am looking at today is $109, and the drive comes with OCZ's three-year advanced warranty plan in case something does go wrong.

The packaging of this drive uses OCZ's familiar blue with silver highlights color scheme. The front panel of the box features a picture of the drive with just a small amount of text to identify the drive and capacity. The back side talks about the OCZ feature set and highlights some key info on why the OCZ Trion 150 is an energy efficient drive that is durable for the consumer. Internally, the drive is packaged in a two-piece plastic shell, while the documentation is tucked in behind the shell. No real extras, but for just over $100, I would be happy with this arrangement.
The OCZ Trion 150 480GB drive fits in the normal 2.5-inch form factor. However, the one deviation is in how thin the drive is. Instead of measuring in at 9mm or more thick, the Trion 150 is only 7mm thick. This thinner drive housing allows the Trion 150 to be used on the latest thin notebooks and laptops; not to mention being easier to hide in a chassis. As a 2.5-inch form factor drive, the side and bottom mounting screw holes are in the prescribed locations for ease of assembly into your PC. The front of the drive features a new OCZ logo, while the back lists the part number (TRN150-25SAT3-480G), serial number, and drive capacity of 480GB. Drive performance specifications are sequential read of up to 550 MB/s, sequential write of up to 520 MB/s, random read (4KiB, QD32) up to 86,000 IOPS, and random write (4KiB, QD32) up to 83,000 IOPS. Pretty solid performance numbers for such a low-cost drive. Drive connectivity is standard for a SATA 6GB/s interface, using a single data connection and a power connection to supply the 5.0v operating voltage.
Internally, OCZ is using Toshiba's TC58 8-channel, quad-core controller to manage the 480GB of 15nm TLC TSOP NAND, while using a 512MB Micron DDR3 DRAM for caching. It all looks good on paper, but the key is how does it all work together when you compare it to the performance of other drives and controllers?
