NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV Closer Look:

After plugging in the unit and connecting it to my television, booting it up is as simple as touching the subtle NVIDIA logo. You're then presented with your typical Android setup screens, first asking you to select a language, then asking you to connect to a network, and finally asking if you would like to log into a Google account. Upon doing all those things and accepting a few agreements, you're finally presented with the Android TV interface, which contains easy access to apps and games, as well as a search bar.

For better or worse, NVIDIA has opted to use the standard Android TV interface. The UI is certainly sleek and easy to use, but there is not much in the way of additional functionality you can find on your typical Android mobile devices. It's nice that NVIDIA opted to go with the standard, but Android TV is too much in its infancy right now, and it left me yearning for more, like the obvious: a web browser! Yep, that's right, there's no web browser installed. You can download a "Web Browser for Android TV" that is okay to use, but it's not perfect. You can also get Chrome installed with a little effort, but it will not be usable unless you connect a mouse. Google takes most of the blame for this shortcoming, but NVIDIA could have customized the Android TV platform instead of just using the vanilla offering, so NVIDIA must take part of the blame here, too.

Aside from my complaints about the lack of web browser, the actual setup is easy and straight forward, so let's get on with the actual testing.
