Luxa2 EnerG Slim 10,000mAh Power Bank: Testing

For the purpose of this review, the Luxa2 EnerG Slim 10,000mAh Power Bank will be used to charge a Samsung Galaxy 5s smart phone. With the increasing size of phones and tablets every generation, it's not uncommon to see a drop in battery life while playing games or watching videos. Luckily, Samsung opted for a 2800mAh capacity battery, which is more than enough power to keep the phone up and running for most of the day. The quad-core processor and graphics chip will also draw higher than normal power depending on the usage. Knowing that I use my phone quite heavily and play games, I'm pleased with the battery life/usage ratio of the Galaxy 5s. More battery life is always welcome, especially when the charger is not available, or when there is simply no power plug around. It's common for me to get down to 15% and simply not be able to use my phone besides minor texting and phone calls in fear of a dead phone soon after. This is when the EnerG Slim comes into play and can save the day.

Testing system:

  • Processor: Quad-core 2.5GHz Krait 400
  • Graphics Processor: Adreno 330
  • Memory: 2GB RAM
  • Operating Sysytem:  Android OS, v4.4.4
  • Display: 1080 x 1920 pixels, 5.1 inches
  • Battery: Li-ion 2800mAh

Testing settings:

  • Battery depleted to 10% on the Galaxy 5S
  • Screen off
  • Wifi, Sync, location, and default services are on
  • Luxa2 EnerG Slim 10,000mAh Power Bank fully charged
  • Cable used is the default one that came with the phone (USB 3.0 / 2.1A)
  • No calls or other usage during charging

 

Testing:

To test the Luxa2 EnerG Slim 10,000mAh Power Bank, I first charged it fully as instructed by the manufacturer in the quick reference guide. It takes around seven hours to get four solid blue lights on the unit. It was charged via a USB Power Adapter commonly used with phones. The option to charge through the computer USB port is an option, but be prepared even with USB 3.0 quick charge it will take around 12 hours depending on the computer maximum voltage output. It will be an overnight process either way so using the power bank fully everyday can be a problem if you do not have easy access to a power outlet. While charging and discharging the unit, I was surprised to find the heat from power bank nothing near of what I expected and was quite low, my phone often gets hot to the touch and I was glad to see this wasn't the case for the power bank itself.

For this review I used the Samsung Galaxy 5s, as that is the only product I have available that is listed on the back. Of course any phone or device that charges through USB would be doable, it seem more appropriate to use something already advertised on the back. I was able to charge the phone 2.5 times repetitively over multiple days. Luxa2 states the Galaxy 5s should only charge 2.3 times with a 2800mAh battery. Give or take a bit, this power bank does exactly what it said. The strange part of this all is how the math doesn't play out. Now i'm not an expert, but with a 90% conversion rate it should be close to 3.2 times. This means either the battery really isn't 10,000mAh, or the conversion rate is wrong. Maybe I'm just not factoring something in. Either way, It does charge roughly how many times it said it would. It just seems slightly miss leading if someone wasn't looking at the small print and just at the total mAh listed.

My personal usage of my phone varies day to day. Usually after texting and browsing the web all day I find myself around 35% when plugging in my phone for the night. On extremely light days I end up around 60% battery life. This translates into being able to charge my phone on the go around 3 day before the power bank runs out. I couldn't ever seeing myself use 2 full charges in a day, even being on the road. This means that as long as you charge the power bank once every few days, the downtime without a phone will be greatly reduced.
