Intel 7th Generation Core i7 7700K Processor Testing:

3DMark: The just-released version of Futuremark's popular 3DMark suite is designed to let a wider range of the user base make a comparative analysis of the gaming prowess of their systems from entry level PCs, to notebooks, and extreme gaming PCs.

Hitman (2016):

Hitman (2016) is a stealth action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Hitman (2016) is the sixth iteration of this series and acts as a prequel to the entire series, while also taking part after the events in Hitman: Absolution. The game was developed by IO interactive and published by Square Enix, with a release date for PC in March 2016 for the first part of the episodic content. To deliver the visuals, the game uses a modified Glacier 2 game engine. This title takes advantage of the ability to run in DirectX 12 mode for users who have adopted Windows 10.

Settings:

  • DirectX 12
  • Level Of Detail = Ultra
  • SMAA
  • Texture Quality = High
  • Texture Filter = 16x Anisotropic
  • SSAO = On
  • Shadow Maps = Ultra
  • Shadow Resolution = High

Tom Clancy's The Division:

Tom Clancy's The Division faced an uphill battle to become the highest opening day grossing title in Ubisoft's history. Built as an open-world, third-person shooter video game, Ubisoft Massive developed the game with some assistance from Red Star Entertainment for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, with Ubisoft taking care of the publishing. Ubisoft Massive developed and built the Snowdrop game engine specifically for The Divison due to the need for an intelligent engine to manage the dynamic global illumination, destruction, detail, and visual effects.

Settings:

  • DirectX 11
  • Ultra Preset
  • Shadow Quality = High
  • Post FX AA = Off
  • Temporal AA = Supersampling
  • Snow = Yes
  • Fog = Ultra
  • Anisotropic Filtering = 16x

Recently, we were able to see how Intel delivered a massive improvement to its desktop IGP product stack with the Iris Pro 6200 graphics core inside the 5th Generation Core i7 5775C. Where the Core i7 5775C got the premiere integrated graphics solution, Skylake gets Intel's HD Graphics 530-based upon that Broadwell GT3 core. Much is similar when you take a look at the specifications in GPUz. The shader count, ROPs, TMUs, and even rated clock speeds look the same. For Kaby Lake, we see a move sideways with a move up to Intel HD 630-based graphics rather than incorporating Iris Pro on the die. Knowing the user base for this version of Intel's 7th Generation Core series processor, this is not a surprise. Even though integrated graphics performance should eclipse that of Skylake, let's run it through some quick tests.

SiSoft Sandra:

First up will be several tests in SiSoft Sandra's suite of tools. The first benchmark is the Video Shader Compute where I will measure using the aggregate result, followed by the Media Video / Audio Transcode test where I will use the Video Transcoding bandwith result.

3DMark:

For this test, I ran the stock Cloud Gate test and measured the result and associated physics score. This DirectX 11 test is designed to measure the performance of mobile as well as lower end graphics solutions. This would include the performance of the integrated solution incorporated into the Core i7 4790K and Core i7 5775C.

Gaming:

For the gaming test, I will use Tom Clancy's The Division with the settings dropped as low as possible in the video control panel of the game while running the built-in benchmark to find out the result. As expected, the Core i7 5775C with its integrated Iris Pro graphics does the best in this scenario.

When you get to gaming, the video card is going to present another wrinkle to the tests. Traditionally, we see that some games deliver a higher level of FPS than others when you change out the processor. In this case, AMD versus Intel. For the most part we see the Intel processors, when paired with the GTX 1080 Founders Edition, are the highest performers. In The Division, the FX 9590 steps up into the realm of what I see with the Core i7 7700K. The 3DMark scores are dominated by the Core i7 7700K. The integrated graphics were not going to be the strong suite of this card due to the most likely intended usage model: installation in a system equipped with a discrete video card. That being said, it still delivers the second highest IGP scores in game testing.
