Please don't spend hundreds of dollars of your hard earned money on high performance PC components and then install a mediocre power supply. You get what you pay for! The power supply is connected, one way or another, to all the components inside your PC and any major fault can and will cause serious damage. Make sure any power supply that you purchase has built-in safety features like over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature shut downs; they will prevent damage to the rest of the PC should the power supply suffer a catastrophic failure. The power supply, in my opinion, is the most important part of any computer, whether it be an office or gaming machine. Do your research before you buy to ensure you have a unit of sufficient output power, the connectors to suit your needs, size to suit your case, etc. There are hundreds of reviews on the internet, and if you can't find a review for the particular power supply you have your eye on, then my advice would not to buy it. In my opinion, unless it's new to the market, if nobody has reviewed it it's not worth buying. You will, after reading many power supply reviews, become familiar with the major players in the power supply market and gain the necessary knowledge to make an informed decision on which one is right for you. Is the Hiper Power Type M 780W the one for you? Let's find out.
High Performance group was founded in the UK in 2001 and today employs over 250 people with eight offices and three warehouses worldwide. Hiper is now amongst the leading computer component manufacturers in the world. Products include high quality power supplies, conventional PC and HTPC cases, cooling fans, cabling, and keyboards.
"For PC-users with a focus on the values inside, the ultra-efficient Type M series is the one to choose from. With an elegant design in a matt black finish, it offers a range of 630 Watts to 880 Watts. Outstanding value for money. The new cable harness design grants a convenient assembling and clean looking PC interior."
No fancy graphics on this package. The packaging is manufactured from recycled materials and the print is single colour with a dull matt finish. The lid contains a tiny power supply picture along with Hiper Power logo. The photograph of the underside is perhaps a bit misleading, as the information is not printed on the box itself, but onto a thin cardboard sheet held in place by the cellophane wrap.
Front and rear sides are a repeat of the basic design used on the lid. Case badges, should you require them, are attached neatly under the front panel lid flap.
On one side panel we get a list of features, a logo proclaiming RoHS compliance and a recycled and recycle logo. Dispose of this box in the recycle bin and it just may end up being used for another new Hiper power supply. The other side panel contains the only splash of colour on an adhesive information sticker showing the Nvidia SLI-Ready logo, Union Jack with designed in Great Britain, proudly manufactured in China, model number HPU-4M780-PE, and logos of all the agencies for which this power supply is approved. The label also tells us that the Hiper Power Type M 780W takes a universal supply voltage and is able to run from an AC supply of between 100V and 240V.
Open up the lid and the instruction manual sits neatly on top. The power supply is held firmly by foam end caps and all the cables are securely bound and tucked down one side. This power supply is not modular, but does have an interesting solution to cable management, and comes complete with a good selection of adapter and converter cables which will be covered in more depth later.
Externally, the power supply is tidy and well made in a basic black paint finish and chrome fan grill with Hiper logo at its centre. The power supply comes with a choice of main plug, UK or European. If you look carefully at the power supply you may notice that not only is there an exhaust grill on the rear of the power supply but also top and sides. More on this later.
The packaging is basic but adequate on the Hiper Power Type M 780W. The use of recycled materials and minimal internal packaging are enough to keep the power supply secure and damage free without being over the top. The instruction manual is comprehensive enough and there is a good selection of adapter cables.
