G.SKILL Ripjaws SV710 Virtual 7.1 Headset: Software

Setting up the G.SKILL Ripjaws SV710 includes installing the drivers and software which is easy as long as you have an Internet connection. If not you will need to find one and download the drivers to some removable storage device. Users will have to navigate to the G.SKILL website and look up their device. In this day and age almost everyone who would buy this should have an Internet connection, and it is usually best to get the latest drivers anyway.

After finding the download page for the SV710 and downloading the files, a full screen installer guides you through the installation process. After a quick restart users can access the settings application. The default settings are stereo sound, no noise cancellation, microphone volume set very low, and a flat equalizer. Clicking the Dolby logo gives users the choice between music and movie modes with environment sizes including: Studio (Small), Cinema (Medium), and Hall (Large). Virtual 7.1 mode gives users the ability to adjust where a sound is produced per channel and how loudly.

A settings menu is accessible after clicking a gear icon. This menu enables users to toggle whether or not a tray icon is shown for this software, to change the transparency of the application, and the ability to change the default language. Clicking the i button brings up the information window. It tells users the CPL (Composition Playlist) Version, 3D Audio Engine, Audio CODEC, Audio Driver Version, DirectX Version, and Audio Controller. At the bottom the DSP information is also displayed. Lastly there is a minimize button that sends the software back to the tray and a G button that sends you to the main G.SKILL website.

The software is pretty simple, and after some updates is much more stable. Earlier releases had trouble finding the headset among other issues.
