Anonabox Pro TOR VPN Router Introduction:
Not long ago, Internet privacy was not that big of a deal. Sure, corporations and governments used VPNs and encryption, but it was not widely known to the average Joe. Fast forward to today, with recent leaks of NSA spying by Edward Snowden and Internet privacy being stomped on every day, keeping yourself protected and your data confidential is more important than ever. Even if you are not doing anything wrong, your rights and freedoms should not be tossed aside by someone else saying so.
While we at OCC do not condone using technology to commit crimes, such as illegal downloads, my personal view is that you should have the right and freedom to keep others from prying into your communications and private life. While it has become easier to protect yourself with technologies, such as with PGP encryption, VPN, TOR, etc., a lot of end users are not tech savvy enough to get into the command shells and set up these things to protect them. They need a simple, no frills way to get online and protect their transmissions, not only at home, but while on the go as well. I searched around and there are a few, but not many, that do not require set up and heavy configuration.
One product that looked very promising was a crowdfunding campaign that took off through the roof. This product is the Anonabox, which offers quick easy access to privacy using VPN and TOR, keeping those prying eyes away. Anonabox allows even the not so tech savvy people to protect their privacy, access the deep web using TOR, stop monitoring sites from tracking you, and protects you from hack and exploits, such as man-in-the-middle attacks.
Anonabox has several different models based on need, but today we are going to be taking a look at the flagship model, the Anonabox Pro. The Pro model offers a combination of TOR and VPN to really keep your data access private and untraceable, and WiFi access for the flexible usage. Anonabox supports several VPN vendors out of the box, which we will look at better later, including Hide My Ass and VyprVPN. The best part of the Anonabox is the easy-to-use GUI interface, which lets you do all of the set up and monitoring without having any shell command or scripting knowledge. As a Security Engineer and Consultant for the last 10 years, I have used TOR many times and I am a huge proponent of encryption and VPN, so this project had my eye from the very beginning, and I hope you are as excited as I am to dig into this little box.
Anonabox Pro TOR VPN Router Closer Look:
The Anonabox Pro is tiny, so I am not surprised it came in a little box. The packaging of the Anonabox Pro uses the same sleek black color scheme that is on the Pro unit itself. On the front side of the packaging is the Anonabox Pro logo, with a picture of what the unit looks like from the top. On the reverse side are details of the Anonabox Pro, such as it being portable and easy to conceal, protects your privacy, features of the Anonabox Pro, and what you can use it for, such as accessing the deep web, keeping your location and data secret, and protecting yourself on public WiFi.
The Pro is sandwiched in a protective package to keep it safe. Removing the unit exposes the included accessories, which are a micro USB cable and the starting guide. I definitely recommend reading the starting guide to get the unit online and working as quickly and efficiently as possible. One thing to note, no Ethernet cable is included, which is not necessarily needed since the unit supports both client and AP WiFi modes at the same time. I always have a small Cat 5e cable on me all the time, just in case.
Now that we have the Anonabox Pro out of the packaging, we can take a more personal look at it.
