AMD FX-8320E CPU & MSI 970 Mobo Testing Setup:

Testing the AMD FX 8320E will involve running it and its comparison products through OCC's test suite of benchmarks, which include both synthetic benchmarks and real-world applications. The gaming tests will also consist of both synthetic benchmarks and actual gameplay, in which we can see if similarly prepared setups offer any performance advantages. The system will receive a fully updated, fresh install of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition, in addition to the latest chipset drivers for each board and GeForce drivers for the NVIDIA GTX 770. To ensure as few variables as possible, all hardware will be tested at their stock speeds, timings, voltages, and latencies, unless otherwise stated. After stock speed testing, each processor will then be overclocked as much as possible, while still maintaining full stability.

Overclocking the AMD FX-8320E was one of the simplest overclocks I've ever performed. Feeling ambitious, I started by attempting to hit 5GHz with "safe" voltage around 1.55 volts. While the system would boot and be generally stable in Windows, heavy stress testing resulted in crashes and reboots. I started inching my way down towards stability, which arrived at 4.7GHz. I then dropped the voltage on the CPU down incrementally to 1.5 volts, testing stability at each drop in voltage. Temperatures at 4.7GHz and 1.5 volts were toasty at nearly 65 °C full load, but the system was 100% rock solid for all testing and a long run of both Intel Burn Test and Prime95 in small FFT mode. Gaming temperatures were much lower and the system never throttled due to overtemp. Granted, if you overclock the 8320E like this, you're throwing away that nice 95 watt TDP...is it worth it? I'd say yes, as you'll see on the next few pages! A full 1.5GHz over the base clock makes for a pretty peppy system!

Maximum Core Clock Speed:

Each CPU has been tested for stability at the listed overclocked speeds. These clock speeds will represent the level of performance shown by the overclocked scores in the testing.
