GTA V's Success Reaches $6 Billion, Firmly Establishing its Success

Grand Thefta Auto V originally launched in 2013, then came to the PC in 2015, and despite its age continues to prove itself a success. Now it appears it is the most financially successful media title ever, and by large margins. Having sold 90 million units, it has brought in around $6 billion, which leaves movies like Star Wars and Gone With The Wind in the dust with their $3 billion each (adjusted for inflation).

It might be the case that other game franchises have proven more successful, but it would be franchises like Mario Bros. and the whole of the franchise, not just one game. To make it even more impressive, GTA V launched without its GTA Online multiplayer counterpart, but over the years Rockstar Games continued to work on the game, adding new features and content while also addressing weaknesses. This capacity to change according to the consumers' desires sets video games apart from other forms of media and has certainly helped to fuel its success.

This is most likely an outlier, but as video games continue to grow in popularity, it is an interesting thought to consider when we might see new records set.
