AMD Acquires 60 GHz Wireless IP and Talent from Nitero
Possibly not the kind of news most people would expect, but today it was announced that AMD has acquired intellectual property of engineering talent from Nitero. Nitero is an Austin based company that has been creating millimeter wave solutions for use in wireless VR and AR headsets. Most of us are certainly familiar with the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrum used in wireless technologies today. Millimeter waves, with their much shorter wavelengths, reach 60 GHz allowing for low-latency multi-gigabit transmission. Combined with beamforming and the line-of-sight requirement for previous mm-wave systems is solved. The ultimate hope is to use this technology to remove the cables from modern headsets, opening up room-scale VR and making but VR and AR more comfortable to use. Co-founder of Nitero, Pat Kelly, is also joining AMD as corporate vice president, Wireless IP.
