DeepMind is the artificial intelligence (AI) project from Google company DeepMind Technologies and it has been used in the past to take on human competition in the board game Go. It is about to embark on its next adventure through a partnership with Blizzard that will pit DeepMind against real-time strategy game StarCraft II. This should present a great challenge to researchers as StarCraft II requires many steps for success including resource management, battle planning, and reacting to the moves of your opponents. DeepMind addressed the challenge presented by StarCraft II, stating "StarCraft is an interesting testing environment for current AI research because it provides a useful bridge to the messiness of the real-world. The skills required for an agent to progress through the environment and play StarCraft well could ultimately transfer to real-world tasks." DeepMind will start with the same tutorial given to new players and will progress from there as it tries to learn the game and conquer its' many complex interactions.
