Star Control: Origins Announced

For those of you that remember the original Star Control games with fondness, you may be happy to hear that Stardock has announced a new entry in the franchise is coming: Star Control: Origins. It is an action/adventure game set in 2086 when Earth has received a distress signal from somewhere without our solar system. This leads the first united space exploration force, Star Control, and you will play as The Captain tasked with investigating the transmission and the galactic exploration that follows.

Many of the original gameplay elements will be returning for this release, though updated and expanded in ways modern hardware allows for. You will be able to land on and explore planets, which are now spherical entities, and the lander can jump over obstacles and rotate its cannon to deal with hostile environment and creatures. Player interactions with alien races remains a focus for the game, and to that end a new cast of aliens will be introduced and with a dynamic rendering engine, the aliens and their speech will be rendered in real-time. To make sure the music is appropriate, Stardock has been reuniting musicians that worked on the original game. Chris Bucholz, a Cracked.com columnist, will be leading the story and writing effort.

There is a great interest in properly recreating what made the original games the classics they without copying them, and Stardock is hoping those who join the Founder's Program will help them with that. For $35, fans can pre-order the game, gaining early access to the first playable version, as well as mod tools and access to the Founders Vault. For $99.99 you will also get the soundtrack and the Lifetime Pass to all future DLC and expansions for Star Control: Origins. You can find this and more information at the Star Control website. The game has a release target of 2H 2017 for PC and a later console release.

Just wanted to say kudos for mentioning this. Star Control 2 is for me part of the history of games that I never finished. :) I did spend quite a bit of time on it.
