Plex Support Comes to NVIDIA Shield TV

Category: General News

Plex is a popular piece of software used to turn your computer into a media server for streaming "music, photos, movies and TV shows." Users need to have an always-on device such as a PC or NAS, but an update from Plex has changed that. Support is now being added for the Android based NVIDIA Shield TV, marking the "first time Plex has worked without the need for a standalone media server running 24/7." The Shield TV is a sufficiently powerful system and with 500GB on-board storage and the ability to expand through USB, it should be a nice alternative for users that don't want to dedicate a system to the task. Plex is working with NVIDIA to iron out the details with a firmware and software update expected later this month. Plex addressed the move stating, "The SHIELD offers the perfect mix of capabilities for us to be able to enable this functionality. In the future we’d like to expand to support accelerated transcoding on other platforms, as well."

I'd be interested in seeing how many transcode it can handle.
