Apple has offered some of the highest quality displays for some time, perhaps spurred by the number of people that use its systems for various types of design work. The current offering utilizes a Thunderbolt connection to provide a 27" display with resolution of 2560x1440. Rumors are beginning to circulate about the next iteration, which is expected to offer 5K resolution to match current Retina displays offered by the company. In order to power the displays, the rumors are also indicating that Apple plans to include an external GPU in the display, helping to ensure compatibility with systems that may not have a powerful GPU. Systems that have a powerful GPU won't utilize the built-in GPU. I imagine that the added GPU has the potential to significantly increase the cost of the display, and it will be interesting to see if Apple will offer a display without the GPU for users that already have one that is powerful enough.
