Java Browser Plugin Will Soon Be No More

Oracle has announced a farewell tour for the Java browser plugin set to kick off on September 22 with the release of the Java Development Kit 9. The plugin will first be deprecated and then removed entirely in an unknown future release. Oracle described the move stating, "With modern browser vendors working to restrict and reduce plugin support in their products, developers of applications that rely on the Java browser plugin need to consider alternative options such as migrating from Java Applets (which rely on a browser plugin) to the plugin-free Java Web Start technology." The company further added that the change was spurred by web browser makers as "The rise of web usage on mobile device browsers, typically without support for plugins, increasingly led browser makers to want to restrict and remove standards-based plugin support from their products." The removal of the plugin will also mean that malicious users will have one less avenue to attack and compromise systems.
