Pwn2Own Loses HP as Sponsor

Category: General News
Posted: 09:27AM

The Pwn2Own hacking contest to be held at the PacSec West conference in Japan has lost its primary sponsor, Hewlett-Packard, due to changes in the Wassenaar Arrangement, an "international treaty that governs software exploits." Conference organizer Dragos Ruiu explained that the issue is primarily due to the "vague and cumbersome" nature of the implementation of the Agreement by Japan while "Canada's implementation of Wassenaar was much more clear and simpler to comply with." This is cited as HP was able to sponsor the Pwn2Own contest at CanSecWest held in Vancouver. In an effort to still be able to sponsor the event, HP spent more than $1 million on lawyers to analyze the Agreement, money that Ruiu said "should have been spent on researchers and bugs."
