New, Less Cumbersome Data Glasses Developed

Some believe people will be regularly using data-glasses in the future, to seamlessly provide information to us about our environment. While the technology exists already, it is not catching on just yet. One reason for this may be the size of the devices, but researchers at Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft have done something about that by shrinking the technology.

The data glasses in question are see-through, so the information they display would appear directly on top of what a user is looking at. Most current systems that do this consist of a micro-display that generates the image and optics to project it in the correct place. Both parts typically rest on the temple of the glasses. While the new micro-display is similar in size to others, the new optics system is just five millimeters long, making it just one fifth the length of others. This was achieved by using an array of smaller optics placed next to each other, instead of a single, long optical system.

The new design is also capable of correcting the display for vision issues, such as farsightedness. This will allow users with some vision problems to see the information sharply.
