AMD Cuts Price of R9 285 GPUs to $200

AMD first released the R9 285 based on the Tonga GPU last year at a price point of $249. The R9 285 offered performance similar to the R9 280 and 280X with a price that was between the other two cards. Both the 280 and 280X have received price cuts since launch, but the 285 is now in line with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 for both price and performance. The price drop could help AMD take sales from NVIDIA as the R9 285 "features a better memory bus which results in better texture processing and further features a robust geometry processing engine," in comparison to the GTX 960.

The 285 got a lot of bad press because it was positioned and named wrong. The 285 card brings nearly 280X performance to the table along with full support for Mantle, true Audio and Freesync. It is really pretty full featured and gives a great 1080 gaming experience. Plus the Sapphire ITX card is a little beast, cool and quiet :-)

Still too much for it though lol

Newegg has the Saphone IX 295 for $209.00 ( after rebate).

That sounds like a good deal.......

Why buy a 285 when a 960 is similarly priced?

Just purchased the Asus 960 Strixx a week ago on Amazon for $188 w/ free shipping. I have to say, coming from a HD 6950 its a nice jump and I'm overall very impressed with its temperatures and overclocking ability. Part of me wanted to pick up a 290/X but that power draw/heat doesn't float well here in Hawaii. Electricity is retardedly expensive.

Electricity is retardedly expensive.

I found that argument pretty funny. When it comes to heat, I agree: 290 is rather hot. But electricity? No. If you play for 2 hours every day, you will consume about 10 KWh more with 290. If you pay $0.3 per KWh, it's $3 a month. What can you buy for $3? Three apples?

VaporX on May 06, 2015 12:17

The Sapphire Tri-X and Vapor X fix the heat issues, as for power Ginzo has made the point the difference is minor at the end of the day.

If you fold with your pc or like a lot of people game about 4 to 5 hrs per day that $3 per month can rise very quickly. :(

Though the 290 would fold better so you could just fold less for the same amount or fold the same and get more results.

Boo hoo! You live in Hawaii! It's only 33% more expensive than in Massachusetts, but you've got clear, warm waters and tradewinds. We have murky brackish cold water.

Lol, I'd trade a higher hydro bill any day for Hawaii . :teehee:
