Sony Purchases, Shuts Down OnLive

Category: Gaming
Posted: 11:55AM

Sony has announced that it has acquired gaming service OnLive, and has immediately announced plans to shut down the service. OnLive is planning to keep the service running at no charge to subscribers until the end of the month. The company has also announced that refunds will be issued to consumers that purchased the OnLive system or controller after February 1. Unfortunately for users, those "who purchased the company's PlayPass games won't be able to play them after the service shuts down, nor will they be able to use its OnLive game system or controller peripheral on any other platforms."

I never got into the OnLive scene but that just seems wrong to me. It makes me distrustful of any new service.

Wow, this is actually quite shocking. I thought that OnLive was getting a full remake, focusing on other avenues of business.

Sony also acquired plenty of patents from OnLive, so I imagine those will help boost PlayStation Now to make it even better when streaming.

I read the official announcement via onlive's facebook page yesterday. I have used their service sense 2011 or there abouts. It worked well for me most of the time. I liked the concept given what hardware costs.
