FCC Announces Planned Regulations For The Internet

Category: Internet
Posted: 05:36PM

The Chairman of the United States Federal Communications Commission, Tom Wheeler, has announced a proposal that would treat Internet Service Providers as common carriers under Title II of the Telecommunications Act. This is the latest action in the ongoing battle for Net Neutrality that has caused a great deal of debate with supporters of Net Neutrality being outspent by lobbyists and interests against Net Neutrality. Net Neutrality maintained popular opinion support and generated more comments in its favor. The proposal is seen as a "striking victory for net neutrality advocates," and Wheeler stated "I am submitting to my colleagues the strongest open internet protections ever proposed by the FCC. These enforceable, bright-line rules will ban paid prioritization, and the blocking and throttling of lawful content and services." The FCC must vote on the proposal by February 28 and if approved it would likely face a tougher challenge in the Republican controlled Congress.
