Intel, one of the largest semiconductor chip makers in the world, has signed a definitive agreement that will allow the company to acquire Lantiq, a leader in state-of-the-art broadband access technology. Lantiq already holds over 2,000 patents related to broadband communications and has seen its technology deployed in more than 100 global operators. Intel plans on utilizing the technology that Lantiq holds to enhance connected experiences in the home. More specifically, the acquisition will allow Intel to harness the various DSL solutions that Lantiq offers, enabling the chip maker to expand into various gateway markets such as DSL, Fiber, LTE, retail, and IoT smart routers.

The Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel, stated that "The combination of our cable gateway business with Lantiq’s technology and talent can allow global service providers to introduce new home computing experiences and enable consumers to take advantage of a more smart and connected home." Dan Artusi, the CEO of Lantiq, noted that "Together we can drive the transformation of the broadband customer premises equipment (CPE) as it becomes a smart gateway that connects an increasingly diverse roster of devices and services in the home."

Financial details regarding the acquisition were not released by either company. The transaction, which is expected to close in approximately 90 days, is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
