Child of Light Reaches Profitability

Roughly six months after its initial release, Ubisoft's beautiful platforming RPG Child of Light has attained profitability. Speaking at the GameON: Finance conference in Toronto, creative lead Patrick Plourde proclaimed that "it's profitable enough that we would have been able to fund a sequel." Ubisoft took a chance on the smaller project because Plourde agreed to be the Creative Director on Far Cry 3. Plourde didn't want to make Far Cry 3 initially, but Ubisoft's upper brass told him that if he helped build that brand, they would give him "a free shot" at the game he wanted to make. Seems like that agreement was a win-win for Ubisoft, as both games enjoyed great critical and commercial success.

At its peak, there were roughly 40 people working on Child of Light, which Plourde said cost "a couple of million" to make. In September, the Child of Light development team was officially established as a core team at Ubisoft Montreal. While Ubisoft's large-scale AAA titles get a lot of heat, its smaller-scale projects like Child of Light, Valiant Hearts: The Great War, and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon have been universally praised and have enjoyed great success at a fraction of the cost.
