Steam Beta Broadcasting Launches

For some people, livestreaming gameplay probably seems like a weird phenomenon, at least until Amazon bought Twitch for almost $1 billion. Then and now Twitch seems to be the primary streaming service, but that may be changing in the future as Valve has begun a Steam Broadcasting beta.

Currently you are only able to view streams in the Steam beta client, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari. That is if you have permission. Under Broadcasting options, the streamer can restrict viewers to friends they invite, require friends ask to watch, allow friends to watch freely, or allow anybody to watch freely. There are also options for video dimensions, bitrate, where to show the viewer's chat, if the desktop is streamed, and if the microphone is streamed. Streams are live only and not archived, but who knows, maybe that will change through the course of the beta.

Starting a broadcast is a little different than other services as it starts when someone chooses to watch, instead of streaming all of the time with people coming and going as they please. You are able to stop a broadcast at any time though, through the Steam Overlay.
