Retail Sales of Windows 7 and 8 Stopped by Microsoft

If you were hoping to still pick up a computer with Windows 7 pre-installed, you are sadly now out of luck. Over the last few days, Microsoft has officially put an end to sales of computers with most copies of Windows 7 pre-installed, and even Windows 8. The only version of Windows 7 that can still be pre-installed is Windows 7 Pro, as Home Basic, Home Premium, and Ultimate have met their fate. In a related move, Microsoft is also cutting out PCs pre-installed with Windows 8. All of this means that the only copy of Windows you can find pre-installed on new PCs, be it desktops or laptops, is Windows 8.1. Older stock that has yet to be moved should still have the discontinued copies on it, but there's no telling for how long.

The move is likely to get people to jump to Microsoft's most recent operating system, and based on recent numbers, looks like Windows 8.1 is starting to gain ground. It can also be to get people ready to move over to Windows 10 when that arrives next year, which is a combination of the best parts of Windows 7 and 8.
