United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Targeted by Hackers
According to a new report filed by the United States Government Accountability Office, attempts to hack computers in the United States have gradually increased over the years, with government computer security violations up 35 percent from 2010 to 2013. It was also noted within the report that the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which regulates commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, has been successfully hacked three times over the past three years. The attacks were done by unspecified foreigners and a third unknown individual, and were successful thanks to a malicious email attachment as well as phishing emails. According to David McIntyre, a Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman, the computer security team at the commission is able to detect and thwart most hacking attempts.
