Reboots and remasters are all the rage these days. So are Kickstarter campaigns. Yet Virginia-based indie studio Zojoi decided to embark on both well before it was cool. Back in 2012, Zojoi launched a $120,000 Kickstarter campaign for a re-imagining of the classic first-person point-and-click adventure game Shadowgate. The campaign was successfully funded on November 25, 2012, bringing in $137,232. Zojoi is calling it a re-imagining because the team took the original game and built upon it in fresh ways. Now, nearly two years later, it's finally ready to unleash the final product unto the world. Here are the features of the re-imagined Shadowgate (straight from the press release):

  •     All-new and updated puzzles seamlessly expand on the original game
  •     Multiple difficulty levels enable players to play on Master, the renowned difficulty of the original, or scale back the brutality with Apprentice (Easy) or Journeyman (Medium)
  •     Players can take advantage of a bevy of objects, spells, an all-new mapping system and on-screen commands to aid them in their quest
  •     Tons of hand-painted illustrated rooms feature both new and familiar locations
  •     Gorgeous visuals complete with new environmental effects and unique animations offer an immersive experience
  •     Bonus Retro Mode enables players to experience the game like it’s 1989! Choose Hiroyuki Masuno’s original NES score, turn the graphics into 8-bit, and more
  •     Customize the experience with the classic or auto-hide control layout, tailored key binds for actions and objects, and/or lock commands for ease of use
  •     Updated storytelling features dramatic cut-scenes, plus all the same great storytelling you'd expect from a Shadowgate adventure
  •     A digitally-orchestrated, dynamic soundtrack and sound effects change based on gameplay
  •     50 in-game and Steam-based achievements to find and unlock

Shadowgate is launching August 21 for Windows and Mac on Steam and other digital outlets, while the iOS and Android versions will launch Fall 2014. You can pre-order a Steam copy from the official site for $14.99 (25% off), with additional options available with extra goodies.

I rented the NES version several times before I was able to beat it. It was one of my favorite console games.

It actually started a Mac game and then DOS before it was ported to NES. Definitely old school origins.
