Popular Bitcoin Website to be Sold at Auction
Bitcoins.com, a popular website for information surrounding the digital currency, will be sold at a United States auction house known as Heritage Auctions on July 24, 2014. The opening bid for the website will be set at $185,000, but expectations are that the website will fetch somewhere around $750,000. The sale itself is being facilitated by Mark Karpeles, the CEO of the bankrupt Mt. Gox Bitcoin exchange. Although Bitcoins.com was launched by Karples, it is owned and operated by Tibanne, which is the parent company of Mt. Gox. Proceeds of the sale will be used to not only support Tibanne, but also to compensate various investors that were burned with the collaspe of Mt. Gox. According to Karples, at least half of the final sales price will be paid to Bitcoin holders who lost substainal amounts of money with the collaspe of Mt. Gox.
