Aereo Streaming Service Guilty of Copyright Infringement
Aereo, the relatively new service that gave users the ability to "stream and record video content that’s freely broadcasted over the air," was effectively shut down today after a 6-3 ruling by the United States Supreme Court. The service was found to be guilty of copyright infringement with Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer stating, "We must decide whether respondent Aereo, Inc., infringes this exclusive [copy]right by selling its subscribers a technologically complex service that allows them to watch television programs over the Internet at about the same time as the programs are broadcast over the air. We conclude that it does." The decision is a major blow for users that were looking for potential alternatives to large cable providers and broadcast networks.
