Snail Games' free-to-play MMORPG Black Gold Online will be entering Open Beta later today, and if you're a longtime MMO veteran, this is one you'll want to try. Black Gold Online is a steampunk and fantasy MMORPG with two distinct factions: the steam-powered Kingdom of Isenhorst and the magic-wielding Erlandier Union. Each faction not only has distinct races, but also distinct classes and mounts, harking back to the day where MMO players actually had to make tough decisions right from the start.
While Black Gold Online may take a bit of an old school approach to characters, it does throw in something new to the fold: mounted combat. There are over a hundred different mounts, called Carriers, broken into five categories, including aerial; with Isenhorst getting personalized mechs and Erlandier getting personalized warbeasts. Players can have more than one and you can level them up and upgrade them, making them truly an extension of your character.
Lastly, the game offers a great mix of both PvE and PvP content, even combining the two for those truly looking for a challenge. On the PvE side of things, there are random world evenst you can participate in for extra rewards. On the PvP side of things, not only are there battlegrounds, but also open-world PvP in contested regions. There's even a dungeon called The Chambers of Greed, which combines PvE and PvP, bringing up fond memories of Darkness Falls in Dark Age of Camelot.
While the game is free-to-play, Snail Games is selling a retail version for $19.99 called Black Gold Online: Conqueror's Edition, which includes exclusive garments (Officer's Overcoat and Ceremonial Garment), special crafting crystals (Soul Crystal and Stone of Blessings), and over $20 of in-game currency; all of which will be redeemable during the Open Beta.
The Black Gold Online Open Beta begins today at 2P PDT, exclusively for Windows. You can register an account here and download the client here. I attached all the beautiful "E3 screenshots" from last week for your viewing pleasure.
