Google has officially acquired Skybox, a startup company that specializes in satellite photos, for $500 million. The search engine giant plans to use Skybox to keep its Google Maps service up-to-date with accurate satellite imagery. Besides utilizing Skybox to improve its Google Maps service however, Google noted that in the future it hopes to harness the technology possessed by Skybox to further its intent of providing assistance in disaster relief situations. With Skybox launching one of its own satellites last November in an effort to capture views in major cities around the world, Google will be able to control its own fleet of satellites in order to further its disaster relief goals down the road.

While both companies are on board in regards to the acquisition, the price for Skybox may change and the deal itself is subject to approval by regulators.
