Crytek Entering the F2P MOBA Fray with Arena of Fate
Free-to-play first-person shooter Warface must be doing well for Crytek because the company has announced another free-to-play title, Arena of Fate. Or maybe Crytek just didn't want to sit back while most other major publishers join the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) landscape. That being said, while Arena of Fate does indeed feature MOBA's famed 5 vs. 5 match-ups, it sounds like Crytek will be switching up the actual gameplay formula from the norm.
While we don't actually know what the gameplay will be like at this time, what we do know is that the game will feature a roster of legendary, iconic heroes (and villians) from history and fantasy. The characters unveiled so far are Fenrir, Robin Hood, Tesla, Joan of Arc, Little Red Riding Hood, Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper, and Baron Münchhausen. By tapping into history and fantasy, Crytek pretty much has an unlimited supply of unique characters at its disposal, so it'll be interesting to see how many characters are available when the game finally launches. Aside from the iconic characters, Crytek is challenging itself "to carefully craft a streamlined player experience that allows for both greater accessibility, and rich, deep, action-packed gameplay."
Arena of Fate is scheduled to enter Early Access Beta testing on PC this Summer and will eventually make its way to consoles as well. The latter leads me to believe it won't be your typical MOBA interface, which is difficult to manage with a controller, but rather more third-person, action-RPG. The PC version will be playable at E3 from June 10-12 at the Crytek booth. You can sign up for a chance at the PC Beta at the official site linked below.
