Johnathan Nightingale, the Vice President of Firefox, has revealed that Mozilla will be experimenting with offering advertisements within tiles that are featured when new tabs are opened. According to Nightingale, the advertisements will be a mix of Firefox websites and other useful websites across the Internet. The intent is for new users of the Firefox Internet browser to receive recommendations of websites on fresh installs of the web browser, since Firefox would have no traffic history to build from. At this time, the experimentation of advertisements that are to be displayed within new tabs is only being applied to Firefox builds that are a part of the pre-release channel.
The testing does not provide any additional revenue for Mozilla, and sponsorship would be the next stage of the new tab offerings if the venture proves valuable for users.
