Last month, it was unveiled that two gameplay designers who worked on The Witcher franchise left CD Projekt RED to join indie developer 11 bit studios, the developer behind reverse-tower-defense series Anomaly. At the time, 11 bit studios wasn't ready to reveal what the two would be working on, but stated that an announcement would likely come in March. Well, it's March, and an announcement has indeed been made: This War of Mine.
11 bit studios says that development has been driven by the tagline, "In war, not everyone is a soldier." This War of Mine "is a dark survival game where players control a group of civilians trying to stay alive in a besieged city." The game plays almost opposite of what you'd expect for a typical survival game – during the day, you're trapped inside your shelter by snipers outside, while at night you go out and scavenge nearby areas for food, medicine, weapons, and other useful items.
The game is inspired by one man's real-life survival in a besieged city. It's a game about hardship and tough decisions. "In TWoM players have to make life-and-death decisions based on their conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them in order to prevail; there are no good or bad decisions during war. There's only survival."
This War of Mine is being developed for PC and mobile devices, with PC being the priority, but a release window has not been stated. The game will be shown at GDC next week.
